Characteristics Of Citrus Essential Oils

Believed to originate in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, citrus fruits have been known throughout Europe for over 2000 years. Whilst citrus fruits are best known for their scents, they are commonly believed to house a range of health benefits and are packed with vitamin C.

Citrus essential oils are sourced from their fruits in 2 ways, steam distillation or cold pressing. Cold pressing is more commonly used to press extract oils from fruit rinds where the majority of the essential oil resides.

What Do Citrus Essential Oils Smell Like?

Citrus essential oils smell like the fruit from which they are derived, However, it is also possible to extract essential oils and absolutes from the flowers, also known as blossoms of citrus trees, such as neroli, which is a very floral essential oil derived from a bitter orange tree.

There are also methods of extracting woody essential oils from the leaves and twigs of the citrus trees. The most common of which would be petitgrain oil, which is normally derived from the bitter orange tree.

What Colours Are Citrus Essential Oils?

Cold pressed essential oils are most often similar in colour to the fruit that has been processed. However, distillation can often result in a lighter coloured essential oil.
