Essential Oils for
Cosmetic Use
Essential oils are usually steam or water distilled from plant matter such as leaves, flowers, and roots. However, most citrus essential oils are extracted by cold pressing. Essential Oils have been used for many years to impart their natural essence or aroma into cosmetic formulations.
Essential Oils are often used in a wide range of cosmetic applications, such as skincare, haircare, and body-care products due to their natural status which offers a plethora of marketing directions for cosmetic manufacturers.
Absolutes for Cosmetic Use
Absolutes are extracted from concretes and oleoresins normally using ethanol to solubilise the volatile parts of the plant. Following further distillation and filtration to remove insoluble components and residual ethanol, the absolute is ready for use. Known for their powerful and complex scent profile, they are particularly suited to fragrancing premium cosmetic formulations.
In cosmetics, absolutes are commonly used to fragrance high-end skincare, luxury creams and other premium body care products.
Balsams for Cosmetic Use
Balsams are natural plant exudates, including certain types of plant sap. These materials are often excellent fixatives for fragrances and allow odour to last longer and have more depth. They are commonly used to fragrance cosmetic formulations such as balms and ointments, barrier creams, and solid perfumes, where their olfactive nature imparts a robust natural fragrance that lasts.
Resinoids for Cosmetic Use
Resinoids are concentrated extracts obtained from non-cellular plant matter using solvent extraction. Much like Balsams they are often used as a Fixative in fragrances for cosmetics, resinoids are commonly used in balms and salves and perfumed creams, where they impart a natural fragrance to the end application.
